Smith falls in love with Maria, however, her family does not approve of the relationship despite South Africa having become a free, democratic country.

She falls pregnant but she doesn't tell her lover before he returns to Jamaica. When she gives birth to Sune, she is soon forced to surrender her for adoption when it becomes clear Sune's father is not white.

Maria manages to get Sune back but she is arrested for killing her brother, the child is given up for adoption again.

18 years later Smith, returns to Johannesburg and meets a young woman. They fall in love and he proposes to Sune. When Maria is released from prison on the day of the wedding, she has no choice but to declare the terrible truth...
